Icarus is adding more live jazz and a new jazz menu!
Thursday and Friday evenings are “Deja Lulu" in honor of the beloved South End nightclub of the 1960s & 70s. During those years, In the 60s and 70s, there was no groovier place to be on the weekend in Boston than Lulu White’s, a popular (and populist) jazz club and watering hole with low lights, blood red fabric walls, a packed dance floor, and a menu of spicy southern style cuisine.
Chef-owner Chris Douglass felt that time was right to bring back the groove. Beginning this month, modern jazz pianist Keigo Hirakawa will perform in the Icarus lounge every Thursday from 7 to 11 PM, with no cover charge. Hirakawa, who emigrated to Boston from Japan four years ago, has made a name for himself at other area hot spots like Foundation Lounge and Wally’s. Each week, he’ll appear with fresh accompanists from the New England Conservatory, who will be chosen to complement his energetic, spontaneous style.
On Friday nights in the same time frame, veteran pianist Mark Kross tickles the ivories with a changing roster of top name local musicians from vocalists to trombonists. October 10 is Dave Whitney on trumpet; October 24 is Mark Pucci on bass.
All this live jazz is making you hungry ? Not a problem. Icarus has just introduced a jazz menu, available in the lounge, with palate pleasers priced at $10 or less. Try Pork Schnitzel and Spaetzle … Bruleed Duck Liver Pate … or Asian Chicken Skewers with Peanut Sauce. Special wines by the glass are also being poured nightly; the Edmunds St. John Gamay Rose’ is as jazzy as they come.
